Deirdre Johnston, Co-ordinator of Original Kerry announces Original Kerry’s participation at the Rose Festival this year.

If you love all things craft and you love festivals, then The Festival Food and Craft Market on Denny Street during the International Rose of Tralee festival this year is the place to visit. Five members from the Original Kerry Project will be flying the Kerry flag for craft excellence at this year’s market which takes place from 9am to 6pm from the 17th to the 21st August next.

One of 2012’s most recent craft brands to emerge from the County is that of Monson Irish Jewellery, headed up by David Monson from Ballinclemissig, Ballyheigue. David uses a variety of woods and metals across two ranges of jewellery that have proven very popular in shops in Ireland and in North America where he has begun to export his Celtic range.  “Being part of the Rose of Tralee Market allows me to meet my Irish customers, to take feedback and to trade at an event that brings an international audience to the County,” remarked David referencing his participation in the Festival Food and Craft Market.

Other makers represented at the Festival under the Original Kerry brand include Colleen Bowler, a potter from Castlegregory whose work is well-renowned for its skill and beauty. Alongside Colleen will be John O’Connor from Sandhopper Art, another Castlegregory native whose work with stone in both etching and carving is top quality and very often commissioned. Mary Fitzgerald will have her very popular range of Malaí Dingle Bags at the Market – all hand-stitched and bang on trend while Ken Bolger from Ballyferriter will bring a range of Valentia slate gift items that feature the very popular Ogham alphabet.

Deirdre Johnston, who co-ordinates Original Kerry, went on to remark that “craft is often well suited to a market setting and the chat and banter in the Original Kerry tent promises to be good.  The work on offer will certainly be very fine.”  The Original Kerry project currently supports fifty-six craft making businesses from across the County.
